What AI Detector Does Turnitin Use? (And What You Can Use Instead)
Short answer: Turnitin uses its own, proprietary AI detection model. There is no public tool you can run that reproduces Turnitin’s scores, because the model, its training data, and its thresholds are not published.
Here is what is actually known — and what to use instead when you need an answer today.
What Turnitin built
Turnitin’s AI writing detection is an in-house classifier integrated directly into Feedback Studio and Similarity (and exposed to instructors through LMS integrations like Canvas and Moodle). What is publicly known:
- It is trained to separate AI-generated writing from human writing, with additional work on mixed human-plus-AI text (“AI-assisted”).
- It works at the sentence level, then aggregates to a document-level “AI percentage”.
- It is deliberately conservative: Turnitin says it only surfaces a document-level flag when confidence is high.
- It is periodically retrained — which is why scores for the same document can shift across semesters.
What is not known: the underlying architecture, the training corpus, the decision thresholds, and its real-world error rates outside Turnitin’s own evaluations.
Why nobody can “clone” Turnitin
You will see sites with names claiming to be “Turnitin detectors”. To be clear about what those are:
- They are not Turnitin. They are independent statistical detectors wrapped in Turnitin-themed branding (some with the word “Turnitin” in the domain — which Turnitin’s trademark lawyers could challenge at any time).
- Their models are typically open-source classifiers like GPT-2-output detectors or RoBERTa fine-tunes. Different model, different training data, different scores.
What you can use instead, for free
If your goal is to know how your text reads before an institutional detector sees it, a free open-source check gets you most of the way there:
- TextVerdict (this site) — a RoBERTa-based detector that runs entirely in your browser. Unlimited words, no sign-up, sentence-level highlights, and your text never leaves your device.
- Originality.ai, GPTZero, Copyleaks — commercial freemium detectors; stronger dashboards, but accounts, word limits, and upload-based workflows.
None of them will match Turnitin’s exact number — they cannot, for the reasons above. What they can tell you is whether your writing shows the statistical patterns detectors look for, and which specific sentences look “AI-ish”.
The practical workflow
- Finish your draft honestly (or check text you’re responsible for reviewing).
- Scan it with a free browser detector and read the sentence highlights.
- If human-written sentences score high, make them more yours: add specifics, break up uniform sentence rhythm, cut generic filler.
- Keep drafts and notes — provenance beats any detector score in a dispute.
